About Environmental Crimes Unit

The environmental crimes unit of the office of the attorney general addresses key issues in environmental crimes related to solid waste, hazardous waste, water pollution, air quality, and other dangerous substances. The environmental crimes unit is mandated to investigate and prosecute the serious violation of national environmental laws, collect evidence and initiate penal proceeding to criminal conducts that threatens public health and the environment. The environmental crimes unit mainly focuses on the protection of environment, wildlife, forest and prevention of organized and serious crimes, logging and export of coal, illegal exportation of wildlife, illegal hunting, coastal pollution and export of animals that are banned to be exported from the country. This unit is also responsible to train the other related agencies and educate the community about the negative effect of these crimes on environment, deforestation, cutting and exporting coal, the aim is to prevent these crimes.

The unit will also monitor and implement the international laws, resolutions passed by UN on regard sanction on coal exports and trade. The environmental crimes unit performs their duties according to the guidelines prescribed by the Attorney General.

The environmental crime prosecution unit is led by well experienced prosecutor together with other prominent prosecutors including female prosecutor, prosecution officers and paralegals who support the unit.
